Blogging is still a thing

Snail asked yesterday: “Is blogging still a thing?”

For what it’s worth, I think it still is. It’s just matured over the years. We used to talk about the mechanics of it, the platforms, the whys and wherefores. Now, we just go ahead and blog.

Or not.

I find it slightly amusing that so many of us resurrect our blogs every June, only to let them all sink back into slumber again at the end of the month.

I’ve just realised that this blog will be TEN YEARS OLD this year. I started it on 7 June 2005. Maybe I’ll remember to commemorate it this year. How should I celebrate the ten year thing? (Any ideas, folks?)

Back then I blogged almost everyday. You might say blogging was a habit I slowly grew out out over the years.

I don’t think it’s because blogging isn’t a thing anymore, it’s just that there are so many other things to take up our time these days.

Back when I was blogging in all the months of the year, I would wake up early every morning and sit at my computer and write and post. RSS was a thing. Blogrolls were a thing. Remember those? We used to talk about the biblioblogosphere. Remember, remember?

Nowadays I still wake up early (that habit’s stayed with me), but instead of sitting at my computer I pick up my iPad and look through my Instagram timeline. My Instagram timeline is full of things I like: dogs and fountain pens and friends. Then I look at my Twitter timeline. Then in no time at all it’s time to get ready for work. (That’s exactly what I did this morning, which is why I’m blogging now at 8:30pm, my least favourite time of the day for brain work. C’est la vie.)

I’m not at all sure how I’m going to get through the whole month, blogging everyday. I haven’t got a plan.
