Rules to live by

I’ve been noting different people’s Rules To Live By. Here are two sets that I like.

It all started earlier this year, when I listened to a successful woman executive talk about how she’s gained that success in her career.

That particular executive talked about these ‘rules’ that she tries to live by:
Strong
Be tough and fair.
Don’t take things personally.
“A woman is like a teabag; you never know how strong she is until she is in hot water.” (Eleanor Roosevelt?)

Smart
Know the game and make sure you perform.
Do your very best.

Straight
Be yourself.
Live your own values.

Switched on
Know yourself: what motivates you?
Know the impact you have on others.

Spirit
Have the courage to make changes where needed.
Be prepared to step out of your comfort zone.
Live passionately.

Supported
Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Remember all the people around who support and care for you.

Jason Kottke shared this from a talk he listened to by Stefan Sagmeister, a designer:

  • “everything i do always comes back to me”
  • “trying to look good limits my life”
  • “everybody thinks they are right”
  • “money does not make me happy”
  • “thinking life will be better in the future is stupid. i have to live now”
  • “complaining is silly. act or forget.”
  • “having guts always works out for me”

I haven’t figured out what My Rules are yet. In the meantime I like reading other people’s pithy sayings.

Those ‘rules’ seem so simple, straightforward, it’s strange how we manage to obscure them by all the stuff we get into daily. Okay… maybe just me. Thanks for that, motivational and just want i needed.
