It was far too hot to do much of anything over the weekend. I spent much of the time lying around looking at pictures of dogs and reading (and sweating). I finished Ngaio Marsh‘s Surfeit of Lampreys and the first of Anthony Burgess’s Malayan Trilogy, Time for a Tiger. (Might review this when I finish it. So far very evocative and enjoyable. Why on earth is it banned in Malaysia??)
I could have spent more time online, given that we bought a new monitor for me on Saturday. I am now the happy user of a 22″ widescreen Asus monitor. I am still amused by the number of tabs I can open in my browser without any of them disappearing off the screen (ya, the novelty will wear off).
I could also have spent some time playing with some new pens, but I went and left my pen case at work. I have some new pens from His Nibs (ordered before the Horror Week).
We also watched some episodes of Black Books, and the movie Hot Fuzz (silly but amusing).
Weekends without plans or scheduled activities are good.

What did you think of Surfeit of Lampreys? I thought she tried a little too hard to make the eccentric aristocrats lovable, and the orginal murder was fairly grisly, but not bad overall. I like most of the later Ngaio Marsh’s rather than the early ones – I reread Off With His Head the other week and enjoyed that. Also interested to know how you like Clutch of Constables.
How did you see Hot Fuzz, at a preview or summink? I am deliriously excited about it, as a huge Shaun of the Dead fan. I read an interview with Simon Pegg and he mentioned the line “I’m not made of eyes” which has had me inexplicably giggling all week.
I was intrigued by a description I once read, to the effect that the Lampreys were fond of one another and equally fond of jokes, but I see from an earlier comment that one of your readers thinks the jokes may have been a bit much. Perhaps this discussion will help me make up my mind.

Sheena and Peter I might have to review Surfeit of Lampreys now that you’ve both raised so many questions about it – I found them a tad annoying too, actually. Cote d’Azur a simple holiday place, indeed! And far too much talk about getting a job, not enough action! Hmmph. Are there still many British aristocrats who can lead such lives of leisure? I haven’t read much Ngaio Marsh at all (I think Lampreys is the second I’ve read, but I don’t remember which one I’ve already read). It’s always so good to find more authors to read š
Tom, re Hot Fuzz, umm, we saw a Special Release Version (do I need to say more?? š ) It was very funny. I am still giggling over the “By the power of Greyskull” line. Oh and I liked Shaun of the Dead too š
ooo – i have screen lust!
LOL – I like that description, screen lust, indeed! š
