休息

I just realised that, apart from posting the picture of Paco sleeping on my desk, I didn’t actually state that I was going to be on holidays this week and that posts might be scant. Oh no, actually I did say that I was going to be on holidays, but that was on Twitter. Oops.

So anyway, I have been on a week off, which is why posts have been scant.

I had two plans. Either plan A:

  • Writing: book reviews, blog posts, drafts of articles plus a few considered emails.
  • Reading: trimming down my To Read pile.
  • Tidying: the filing cabinet and the wardrobe.
  • Cooking: to fill the freezer.
  • Upgrading: WordPress 2.2.
  • Thinking: about life, the universe and everything – and coming to some conclusions/decisions.

Or Plan B:

  • Relax and do whatever.

Guess which plan I chose? Plan B was great! I have:

  • Written hardly anything beyond a few comments and responses to comments.
  • Read nothing but The Ptolemies by Duncan Sprott. An amazing book, so far, about the Ancient Egyptian dynasty founded by Ptolemy Soter, narrated by none other than Thoth, the Egyptian god of wisdom and magic. I was in the mood for historical fiction after watching Rome and this has definitely done the trick. I suppose I have also looked at this month’s National Geographic, New Internationalist, Monthly… The New Scientist and Quarterly Essay arrived yesterday but I haven’t even removed them from their packaging yet.
  • Tidied… Sort of. I have picked through the wardrobe (and Paco helped me clear out the sock drawer. Socks all through the house! Chaos!) but the filing cabinet still looms…
  • Cooked? Hah!
  • Not upgraded to 2.2.
  • Thought: lots but no conclusions at all.
  • Walked with Paco who loves going around the neighbourhood.
  • Lazed around watching Futurama.
  • Napped.
  • Not spent much time on the PC at all. I have been building a mighty galactic civilization but victory by cultural dominance still eludes me. Might look at email today, otherwise Mum is going to wonder where I’ve been all week. Twitter? It’s been off.

A mid-year break is always good for me, I find.

休息 xˆiūxi take a breather; have (or take) a rest; rest.

Are you a Civ4 fan? I downloaded the GalCiv2 demo and didn’t really like it. It could be that I’m too used to Civ4, which I’m playing waaayyy too much at the moment.

sounds lovely! Glad you’ve had a good break. 🙂

Matthias, I have played every single Civ. (By day: mild-mannered librarian. Secret ambition: to achieve world domination.) Does that answer your question? Took a while for GalCiv to grow on me but I’m a fan now.

Thanks Penny.

How’d the Sprott book end up? Worth the reading?

CW 12 June 2007

Hiya Woody! Still reading it, but yes, I think it’s worth it.
