365 Library Days

I managed to convince MPOW that we should participate in the 365 Library Days Project on Flickr.

The project? From the “About” section:

Let’s get as many libraries as we can to sign up for a customized, library friendly version of the 365 project. That would mean that if you decide to participate, you would commit to downloading at least 365 pictures from in, around or about the library you work in, for and/or with. Uploading a picture every day for 365 days in this case wouldn’t be practical, but committing to 365 images in a year could be done fairly easily. It could also have HUGE value for your library.

“Imagine what a valuable historic document you could create for your library with this project! And while you’re at it, at the end of your year commitment, you could contact your local newspaper and tell them about the project, where they could do a story and print selected pictures that you took over the year. Such a substantive advocacy project! It would demonstrate in very real ways, ways that get lost to many people in your community, that you and your library are doing important work every day of the year!”

To date, we definitely haven’t managed to upload a picture a day, but the pictures we have put up so far are pretty good, if I do say so myself! (I feel like I can say that as the majority of the photos so far were taken by a colleague, and not yours truly.)

It’s a great idea and a great project – it’s definitely helped us start thinking about documenting events and locations in and around the library.

* I think it’s time I upgraded this blog and picked a new theme. This one automagically puts any bolded text into upper case, which is kind of irritating.

Do you guys have to get permission from students to take their pics? We do and it really limits what we can do. Unless we stick a “fake” student in them the photos are of boring things like computers.

Hi Penny, yes, we do, mainly because we are using these sorts of photos to market our library. If we have shots of people’s backs and they’re unidentifiable, then it’s fine. I agree, it does add an extra layer of work onto the whole endeavour, but we have used student photos (with permission) before so we just have to plan carefully.

Our library is pretty cool inside… I love the funky chairs on level 3 – you should chuck in a few photos of the cool furniture too!

I was going to say that the bold->uppercase problem is pretty easy to fix, but it looks like you’ve done it already. I’m using the same theme and I just fixed the same thing last week. All I need to do now is convince WordPress that there /is/ a difference between bold and italic!
