We attended the Walk Against Warming at Cottesloe Beach this morning.
It was a lovely morning. We brought the dogs, who like the beach, but there were too many people there for a nice walk. According to the ABC there were more than 1000 people there.
At the start of the event we had the usual speeches by pollies – the Greens senator Scott Ludlam (see the response from everyone’s favourite Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy to Sen. Ludlam’s question about the proposed mandatory ISP filter: all bluster), the Cottesloe Mayor, plus Louise Pratt from the ALP among others.
We were also traditionally welcomed to Nyungar land by Ken Collard. I thought of the powhiri in Auckland – New Zealanders seem a lot more comfortable with te reo Maori than we do with any Australian indigenous languages.
A student who spoke challenged the audience to actually start doing things to do make a difference – just attending rallies is not enough.

Heh – I like Paco looking out in the corner of that top photo 🙂
As for Te Reo… you are possibly right tho’ many of us don’t know more than a few words. It’s NZ’s other official language but I am embarrassed to say I don’t speak it.
