Day 8

Thanks to Kate for another meme (you didn’t name it such, Kate, but I reckon it is!).

People I’d invite to dinner:

  1. Michael Stipe, REM singer. But maybe not, as I would likely have a fanboy meltdown around him and it wouldn’t do if the host was a gibbering wreck.
  2. Yo-Yo Ma, cellist. Would it be rude to ask him to play for us while we ate? (Okay, it would.) I’d love to have a conversation about how he learns and practices and improves his skills.
  3. Nelson Mandela, statesman. I’d love to talk about how he persevered and stuck to his ideals in the face of such seemingly impossible odds.
  4. Doris Lessing, writer. I’m a fan. I wonder if the chihuahuas would drive her to distraction though. I’m sure I’ve read that she’s a cat lover.

No more, ’cause my introvert small-talk-is-hard self would not cope very well with too many guests.

Of course the idea of having erudite conversation is completely imaginary as I am likely to be struck dumb in the presence of greatness. Either that or I would be busying myself bustling about with crockery and refilling people’s glasses. That said, I’d hire Neal Jackson to do the catering. Oh, the temerity of it all!

I love yo-yo ma ever since i saw him on West Wing. I adore the cello.

I think I would have all writers or journalists, maybe the odd musicians – Clive James, Margaret Throsby, Geraldine Dogue, Billy Connelly, Jonathan Welch. Perhaps Andrew Denton and Alan Alda? I think all these people would be fascinating to talk to, and not too much work to draw out.

I should hoard this one for blog fodder, but I’d love to have at least Stephen Fry and Oscar Wilde. I’d love to see SF all fanboi πŸ™‚

Hmmm, maybe it is easier to think of all the people I’d never want to eat with? I think I’ll use it for blog fodder too, so thanks for the idea. What about Gore Vidal: he knew everyone worth knowing in the last century? Of course the challenge would be to get others who could talk over him. (But not Bob Carr. Nice but a tad boring if Gore is there.)

Gosh the list of people I’d never want to eat with would be long and would reveal me to be churlish and grumpy and intolerant πŸ˜‰
