I need to figure out a good way of recording my paper and pencil drawings.

My photos are very average:

People – photo with iPhone

I tried scanning today’s drawing but as you can see it came out a bit funny. I fiddled with the exposure etc.

Maybe I need to use my DSLR with the right sort of lens. I wonder what others do. More to learn, hmm.

I think your iPhone photos look good, they capture the warmth of pencil drawing 🙂 I’ve always found pencil sketches difficult to scan – by the time you adjust it so that you can actually see your marks, it’s ruined the original softness and character. I’ll be interested to see how you go with your DSLR camera.

The quality of the light is probably more important than the camera though. Try to find a spot where you get even, diffuse (not direct) sunlight. In front of a south facing window can be very good. Natural light is always easier to work with than artificial light, although you might need to wait for the right weather conditions! If you want to take photos and post them every day, a daylight lamp could be helpful for those days when the sun doesn’t come out.

Thanks – with my daily photos I do try and get the shots in the morning, in front of a window. I don’t have any particular lighting to use right now – trying to keep my buying tendencies in check – and luckily Perth sunshine is pretty reliable, usually 🙂
