Wishful thinking

At the moment, I start my mornings completely uninspired and with zero ideas for drawing.

My only technique for overcoming this lack of inspiration is to sit with my sketch book and draw a line. Usually my line becomes a human head – because I love drawing people – and then it develops from there.

So this morning I was cold and unenthused. I wrapped myself in a woollen shawl and drew my line. I decided to draw myself (the figure in the bottom left hand corner), complete with my shawl and cup of tea. I wished I was in the northern hemisphere enjoying a summer’s day. And so I drew people around a barbecue. And then it just took off from there – I drew people in the park, buying and eating ice cream, sitting in a deck chair, and so on.

Wishful thinking

This drawing is dedicated to my friend Ruth, who commented that I should draw dogs.

While we’re on the subject of comments, M, when he saw this drawing in progress, commented that I do really love drawing people, and what about drawing more objects? My defense is that there are quite a few objects in this drawing.

Hurray for drawing a line, and hurray for wishful thinking, which gave me today’s drawing.

I’m not sure what I’ll do the day the “just draw a line” technique fails to work, however…
