Whims

Just saw Andrew’s post about his desk at home, which he’s kindly offered to his partner for when she works at home.

This made me think about my own set up at home. (I don’t have to share mine.)

I’m always wanting something other than what I have, which drives me nuts. I mean, what do I have to complain about, when I have my own study at home – a separate room, with a desk, lots of shelves (all full), a window, a ceiling fan, an easel (yes) and even a couch I can lie on when I want a change in perspective. The desk has a computer on it and pens and note books and pencils and devices. It’s a bit cluttered because I have a lot of stationery and note books, journals, diaries, my commonplace book. I have a comfy chair. I can shut the door when I want to.

So what else do I want? A drafting table, like what artists and architects use, all fancy. Why? Well, just because.

Problem is, there isn’t really any room for such a contraption in my study. I’d have to get rid of the desk, or the couch, or move some of the shelves. And there’s not really anywhere else in the house to put them.

I’m telling myself to sit with it – THIS TOO SHALL PASS – it’s a whim, a fancy. Use the easel more. Tidy up the darn desk.

Wow, that sounds wonderful Con. I could go for that couch.
I had a room a little like that for a while – and then my partner retired, and joined two committees…Now I’m very good at putting a few things in one room before carers arrive and writing off a bed! and bothering him whenever I need something from the “study”.
I don’t go out to write in cafes like I used to before COVID. But in spring and summer I’ll write a little bit outside.
