I happened to be in Freo today, for a meeting (another “last meeting” with colleagues, which went well), and after the meeting I went past a bookshop. Of course I had to go in. I was mindful that a bookshop is a potentially tricky place for me right now – tricky in that a bookshop will severely test my resolve to not buy things – so as I walked in, it occured to me I could be purposeful in my visit and look for a book that was on my wishlist! And, mindful that I have more than one book on the list, I told myself to just buy ONE book. A nice and sort of natural restriction.
I went straight to the graphic novels/manga section and initially thought I was going to have to leave the shop without buying anything because I didn’t see either of the two graphic novels on my list on the shelves. But then, hurrah! – My Favorite Thing is Monsters, Book Two was on the ‘new books’ table.
So I am now the proud and happy owner of a copy of this amazing book. Honestly I could just sit and gaze at and admire each stroke in the cover image.
What was unexpected about this whole process/situation was how much more enjoyable I found it. Because I’m not just buying anything I sort of want, and buying things is something I’ve seldom done this year, it was actually fun to find and buy this book. I was not expecting this at all – an added pleasure. I’ll enjoy reading this book, and admiring the artistry.
