I have a question for you, dear reader. When you think of librarians, what images come to mind? (All images, good, bad, censored…) What do you expect a librarian to be able to do for you? Could you please tell me? Either by posting a comment here or by dropping me an email at flexnib at gmail dot com.
Do any librarians read this blog? What do you think a librarian should be able to do?
I’ve just been thinking about The State of The Profession lately. Had a discussion with My Boss yesterday which culminated in him asking me if I was worried about librarianship, to which I said, yes, I was! It’s all a bit garbled in my head at the moment, but I’m still thinking about it and hope to write something here soon. I just hope I won’t be calling this post The Death of Librarianship. (I am probably just being my usual see-a-catastrophe-looming-in-every-scenario self and given a bit more thinking and talking with M and colleagues, am likely to calm down in time.)
*Has anyone seen The Librarian: Quest for the Spear?

I expect a good librarian to not only help me find what I want but also point me to things that I didn’t know I wanted – based on my query. 🙂
As for images of a librarian, I have a ridiculous one from a movie called “Tomcats”. The hero played by Jerry McGuire thought he could seduce a prim and proper librarian but when she brings him home, she turned out to be a sadist and he was the one who got “schooled”. 😛
Thanks Mooiness. I aspire to being knowledgeable enough to recommend things that the person asking doesn’t know exists! 🙂
Images/stereotypes of librarians could fill a whole other post, I think!!
