Anticipation

I suppose it is a good sign that I am considering what writing project I should tackle next, despite the fact that I haven’t quite finished the current project. Or despite the fact that I am likely to go and bite off waaay more than I can chew next time.

The funny thing is, I’ve actually enjoyed working on these articles. The blogging article especially. (I still don’t know if I’m ‘allowed’ to post it pre-conference, I might ask after I submit and see what they say. I haven’t spotted any copyright statements or anything like that.) Sure, I’ve been moaning and whinging and carrying on a fair bit about how awful the process is.. how difficult to get the words out… boo hoo hoo woe is me… But the sense of achievement is quite wonderful.

If you’d said to me, this time last year, that writing could be enjoyable, fun even, I would have politely disagreed with you (and privately thought you were nuts). The whole Writing Every Morning thing has really changed how I view writing, I think. It’s no longer a terrifying chore. I still procrastinate at times (habits of a lifetime take a while to break), but this will hopefully change the more I write. And there’s a lot to be said about writing about a topic you are very interested in (The Blog). I’m just thinking about other writing assignments I’ve had in the past. They were usually quite literally assignments – essays and such for coursework – and even if I got to choose a topic I had some interest in, I could never see such writing as writing for writing’s sake, it was always just a chore. Blogging has really changed how I view writing.

Article number 2 is still unfinished at this stage, but I am spending Friday at home where hopefully I will be able to just sit and write and get it done.

And then M and I will be having two weeks’ off! And there shall be much debauchery and indulgence and frolics! w00t!!!!1

Two weeks off – that sounds like bliss. I’m very excited for you and M! (I haven’t had a two-week block of time to myself since 2004.)

CW – did the conference people send you any forms to sign when you agreed to write the paper, or do you have to submit an indemnity form when you send in your full paper? There will usually be a statement on that that you own the copyright of your paper but you shouldn’t publish it in full before the conference (papers should not have been previously published – including online).

You could always ask to submit a pre-review preprint to a repository if you want to do that.

Two weeks off – enjoy!

Cherry, yes, BLISS! Can’t wait!

Fiona, good point. I don’t remember any indemnity form but do remember something about papers not having been published before… As for being on a repository I think I was going to see about getting it on our institutional repository anyway, but I was thinking after the conference. Yes, will have to check about pre-prints…

Ooo debauchery and frolicing! Had you planned to do that with me or without me 😉 hehe

M: You are going to provide the debauchery and frolicking, for my delectation! Didn’t you know??
