Paco knows our weekday morning routine quite well now. About half an hour or so before we leave the house – showering, brushing, dressing – he starts getting droopier and droopier, his expression more and more mournful.

It’s amazing how good animals are at emotional blackmail. Fudge knows when I am going away, she makes pitiful meow sounds at me before I leave and admonishing meow sounds when I get back. She’s not great at facial expression, but for sounds she’s right up there with R2D2 (or Artoo Detoo, not sure about correct spelling).
