Top Ten

I don’t write about music, specifically the music I like, very much.

This post inspired by Triple J’s current Hottest 100 songs of all time. You’re meant to vote for ten songs. Mine:

  1. So. Central Rain – REM. “Did you never call?/I waited for your call/These rivers of suggestion are driving me away” All time favourite (REM) song. Ever.
  2. Misguided Angel – Cowboy Junkies. Casks of wine and late nights talking.
  3. We Built This City – Starship.  Teenage insomnia listening to the radio at 2am with headphones, in bed in the dark and everyone else fast asleep.
  4. Ask – The Smiths. Oh, the guitar in this song. I could have picked Bigmouth Strikes Again, or Shoplifters of the World Unite, or William, It was Really Nothing… The guitar won.
  5. Throw Your Arms Around Me – Hunters and Collectors.
  6. Talkin’ Bout a Revolution – Tracy Chapman. C’mon, it’s got the word revolution in the title. Love her voice, too.
  7. The Sound of Someone You Love Who’s Going Away and It Doesn’t Matter – Penguin Cafe Orchestra. No words, but beautiful melody.
  8. Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes – Paul Simon. Makes me happy.
  9. Randwick Bells – Paul Kelly. This song always makes me think of Australia.
  10. Cattle and Cane – The Go-Betweens. This song, too.

Honourable mentions:

Just Like Honey – The Jesus and Mary Chain
Wide Open Road – The Triffids
Closer to Fine – Indigo Girls
Yue liang dai biao wo de xin – Teresa Teng. “The moon represents my heart” Pure schmaltz, great voice.
Sugar Hiccup – The Cocteau Twins. Makes me think of lazy afternoons lying around with a pot of tea under an open window. Looking out at a clear blue sky.

(Lucky this wasn’t for classical music. Would have been almost impossible to pick.)

Brave trying to come up with a list. My hottest changes all the time! Three of your top ten are favourites of mine.

Yep, after I put this list together (a couple of days ago) when I tried to recall exactly what songs I’d chosen, I couldn’t! (apart from So. Central Rain which has been my top favourite song FOREVER)

I can’t believe how many of your fav songs I like! I have never met anybody else who has even heard of cowboy junkies!! And also Indigo Girls, Paul Kelly, Smiths and REM. I met by husband at a Hunters and Collectors concert 🙂 Great to know you have wonderful taste in music!

I am going to turn off the tele, hunt in my music drawers and find some cowboy junkies to listen to!

Hey Constance, this top ten list is fantastic. Starship is one of my favorite bands of all time and We Built This City is a Rock and Roll anthem of that time. Ask is also an excellent choice. You can post this to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/ and link back to your site. We are trying to create a directory for top ten lists where people can find your site. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list. It’s much easier than on abc.net.au.
