Fave

Feeling too braindead to write much tonight.

Work has been extremely busy and there are not enough hours in a day to do everything that needs to be done.

Given the tiredness, I was certainly not in the mood to cook tonight – I’m not one of those people who finds cooking relaxing or pleasurable. (This could have something to do with the fact that I used to cook for a living a lifetime ago…)

Anyway, dinner tonight was at Bivouac, which has to be one of my favourite Perth restaurants.

We go there about once a fortnight, I think. We like it that much. (I think M likes it too.)

I was just thinking about why I like it as much as I do.

  1. They have Bress Brut cider on the menu. I love it.
  2. Their food is good. The Gingin goat chops. The mushroom and gruyere croquettes with jalapeño aioli (omigod). The grilled haloumi with zucchini, rocket, pinenuts, sherry vinaigrette and sour cherries (I make sure I pick out and eat EVERY SINGLE sour cherry).
  3. The feel of the place. The art work they have on display doesn’t always appeal to me, but it gives the restaurant a unique feel.
  4. Best of all is the service. The staff are good and efficient at their jobs. The staff are usually the same, too, so they know us, and they actually always seem to be happy to see us every time we turn up. They seem sincere, too, not over the top in their welcome. Friendly and just right.

I think we’ll keep going there as long as this combination of factors exists. Bivouac is not particularly cheap, but as M remarked tonight, we seem not to think about the cost whenever we go there. Too many restaurants don’t get it right – their menus might be cheaper, but the service is crap. Or the feel of the restaurant is off – or it’s too dark, or too noisy, or uncomfortable in some way. Or the food is meh.

I don’t take this pleasant experience for granted! I just hope they go from strength to strength.
