Optimism

This postcard was in the letterbox when I checked it this evening.

Postcard

“Thanks for telling us…
…you don’t want the White Pages® Book.”

Over on the other side, the message states:

“You may have noticed we’re delivering the White Pages® Book in your neighbourhood. This postcard is to confirm we’ve received a request to cancel deliveries of this book to your address.”

I hadn’t noticed the deliveries, actually. Does this mean most of my neighbours have also cancelled their White Pages deliveries?

“This cancellation is valid for three years, so if you move you’ll need to let us know. We’ll contact you when the end of your three year cancellation request is approaching so you can easily renew it if you choose.”

Two points:

  1. May I renew my cancellation for the three years after this stint, now? In fact, no, may I renew my cancellation indefinitely?
  2. I think it’s supremely optimistic to think that the White Pages will still be published in paper format in three years’ time, actually.

They’ve delivered them to my building, and they’re just sitting there in a stack. The tenants in our part of the building are in their 20s and 30s… I think we all use… the Internet? I only find White Pages useful when I don’t know the name of a company that will serve my needs, and can browse local business names by trade. But then I usually follow that up with a visit to their website!
I agree. Paper phone books, 3 years from now? Not likely. Even my bank in Canada has stopped all paper statements unless you specifically opt-in and pay $2 each.
