Oh Iain…

Heard about Iain M. Banks’ illness last night (via Twitter, of course).

I am very sad. He’s one of my favourite authors, and his Culture novels especially have meant a lot to me over the years. I can’t express how much I’ve wished I lived in a post-scarcity universe.

I suppose I will have to settle for the fact that I live now, in a time when I can learn, via the Web, how someone on the other side of the world is faring, and go and let him know how much he means to you.

I was reflecting on how much I crave information when I hear that someone I know has a health problem. Yesterday I heard that my brother’s broken his ankle. I confess, I briefly considered signing up to Facebook again, just so I could get all the updates…

(This is not one of my A-Z Challenge posts, but I just could not leave the sad news unremarked… Today’s post was prepared earlier, has been scheduled, and will seem utterly banal – well, my mood was completely different as I was writing it.)

Facebook has improved a bit since its easier to filter/unfollow these days. I tend only to pay attention to family posts and bands I like. I only read friend updates when i seek them out myself. Much more tolerable state of affairs!

Hmm. Not sure it’s enough to entice me back, though…

The main Facebook-exclusives you’ve missed out on are pictures of the broken ankle, Mark waving from inside the ambulance and Mark’s hospital meals. Other than that, the family emails capture the blow-by-blow updates better than a news site.

Good to know! I think I’m kinda glad to not see pictures of a broken ankle…
