I didn’t think I’d like Instagram, but I do.
I created my account there over four years ago, but it didn’t “take” back then.
I tried again just over a year ago, and this time I’ve really got into it. I tend to mostly post on weekends, but I enjoy looking at others’ posts daily.
What I’ve found:
- A picture’s worth a thousand words. It doesn’t matter if you don’t share a common written language; I’m following Japanese, Thai, Arab, Turkish Instagrammers.
- Speaking of language, the tone/tenor of conversation there seems to be light. I think the heart “like” button contributes a lot to this. There is no “thumbs down” option.
- Emojis rule. After an extended period browsing there I find I want to punctuate all my written conversations with emojis.
- Hashtags are everything. Some of the folks I follow use hashtags to great effect – they’re funny, poignant, heartbreaking, informative…
- There are some amazing photographers there. There are also many very average photographers there.
- it’s a great way to practice your camera skills.
- People post pictures of everything. Food, pets, family, scenic spots, wildlife, hobbies…
- Like every other social media site, if you engage – by liking posts and leaving comments and questions – you will inevitably start to make new friends.
