Perth, Western Australia, is supposedly the most isolated capital city in the world. Perth is closer to Singapore and Jakarta than it is to Canberra.
According to the 2001 census, the population was 1,162,716.
The climate in Perth is generally pleasant, although summer (December – February) can be very hot and dry. We get most of our rain in winter. In common with much of southern Australia, we have water problems in Perth from time to time, when our dams are not full enough to cope with our love of gardening.
Perth also apparently has ” one of the strongest and most consistent sea breeze systems in the world”. This feature is particularly welcome in summer time, when the Fremantle Doctor blows in to cool us all down.
Perth is a pleasant, friendly city, although it has been accused of being parochial and boring by some.
I’ve lived in Perth since 1986 (before that, I lived in Malaysia – hello to all my Malaysian and Singaporean readers!).

I was thinking of the likes of Rose Porteous! 😛
that’s good to know cw! i think i have a friend (malaysian) married to someone in perth and she’s living in perth too! i’ll check with my wife on this!
When you think of it, Perth has all the facilities of a city and yet retains the feel of a small town. I dunno, I guess ppl equate snobby ppl with being cosmolitan??? Plus I like the fact that it takes me less than 30 minutes to get anywhere around the city.
Don’t get me wrong – I love Melbourne and Sydney for what they offer. As a place to live though, Perth *is* fantastic.
I agree, Mooiness. It’s clean, the weather is generally beautiful, and we have good infrastructure. The fact that we are close to SE Asia is a plus too, IMHO 🙂 Thanks for your comment!
