Mum’s birthday celebration on Saturday night went well. We had one whole section of the restaurant booked, and eight courses – spring rolls, seafood soup, crispy chicken, whole steamed fish, tofu and vegetables, pork ribs, long life noodles and dessert (home made butter cake and immortality peach buns). I washed everything down with copious amounts of Chinese tea. I did remember not to overeat – I just tasted each dish rather than stuffing myself – so I felt quite good afterwards.
We spent all day Sunday at Mum’s. In the morning we made currypuffs. There were nine of us altogether so it didn’t take long to make 200 currypuffs. (On the left, part of the currypuff production line – the buttery part of the pastry. Arm is jl’s husband, JM’s.) We had them for lunch. Then we played mahjong for hours. I need more practice, I think. My brother on the other hand is becoming a bit of a mahjong shark, winning several hands in a row!
We had durian for dessert (and birthday cake for durian non-fans). Picture on the right, bag of durian debris and segment of durian with sweet rich ambrosial durian.
Yesterday? I think I needed to recover. I had the day off so didn’t need to go to work. We took JM to the airport in the morning, and then jl and I had lunch in town (Isaak: we had Jaws!). Reminisced a bit. Came home, had a nap. Made dinner, watched three episodes of Hell’s Kitchen. I don’t normally like “reality” tv, but Hell’s Kitchen has sucked me in completely.
I wonder if I will be able to catch up on everything today.

Man I shouldn’t read blogs mentioning food just before lunch…..
Hell’s Kitchen! I just watched it for the first time last week, seemed popular on Torrent but had no idea what it was. Kind of fitting given my new foray into cooking! 😉
In regards to the show itself, I’m upon the final episodes I believe and it’s ok but I’m curious to see how Gordon acts in real life, it comes across somewhat dramatised!
Penny, I LOVE reading food blogs while having lunch! 🙂
Is Hell’s Kitchen showing in Canada, tofu? Yeh I reckon Gordon Ramsay is hamming it up for the camera, too. He does it pretty well, most of the time (ie he sounds genuinely aggravated), but I reckon it’s all a show…
Not entirely sure if it’s airing in Canada, I’d believe so. I’ve just been downloading the torrents for the web.
By the way, the link in this post mentions the winner of the series as the final episode has aired! Uh oh 🙂
