Library 2.0 network

The current buzz around the library blogosphere is the new social networking site, Library 2.0, which was created by Bill Drew and is hosted by Ning. I’ve joined up, of course, because when it comes to online buzzes I’m always interested to take a look. After all, in most cases it doesn’t cost anything, I don’t even have to leave the comfort of my own keyboard, and sometimes it even turns out to be very interesting – and Library 2.0 looks like it’s going to be very interesting indeed!

I’ve created a page on Library 2.0 (of course), and have been taking a look at others’ pages, and at what you can do on the site. Besides adding all manner of information about yourself on your own personal page, you can also blog there, and there’s a forum, lots of photos, and even a growing list of videos uploaded by members.

Like every other social networking site I’ve ever looked at, you can invite your friends to join, then add them to your Friends list. It does seem to be a little strange to be adding people I’ve not met as ‘friends’ but I suppose I won’t quibble too much as this is common terminology on these sorts of sites.

I find I’m actually interested in using and visiting Library 2.0, because I think I actually have a lot in common with the people using this network. I have profiles on both Facebook and MySpace, but apart from the couple of people on each site who are my ‘friends’ I haven’t managed to build much of a network there. I can send you an invitation if you’d like to take a look, but I don’t think an invitation is necessary – so come and join the hoo-ha!

A final aside: Why do Ning call themselves Ning, I wonder? The word makes me think of the Australianism, ning nong, which is not exactly flattering. I don’t think the term ning nong is used much these days, though.

Thank you for setting it up, Bill! It’s a really nice network, and I hope it goes from strength to strength!
