This post inspired by my sister jadedlotus. She blogged about her favourite things, things that get her through the week.
Here are some of mine.
In the centre are my iPad and Sony ereader. I can’t imagine life without either of these devices now. You can’t really see this in the photo, but the orange iPad cover is getting really battered. The faux leather is starting to peel. Shows how much I use it. I bring the iPad to work and use it for checking Twitter and email, surfing the web, and reading work documents. It’s great for all those meeting agendas! I also play games and read professional literature (although not as much as I could). The ereader is my preferred reading tool these days. Although I read mostly fiction, I’m finding that it’s a lot easier and more pleasant to read nonfiction (management/leadership texts, history, travel, biographies are my preferred nonfiction genres) with my ereader. In the past, with paper, I could always find an excuse not to read things. They were too heavy to carry around, I didn’t have them with me, I read them too slowly. Now it doesn’t matter as I can carry books on the one device and dip in and out of things as I feel like it. The book on display on the Sony is Perseverance by Margaret Wheatley. I bought it in PDF format, which the Sony copes with quite well. Why do I need both devices? I use them for different types of reading.
Above the devices? The little bird is a clip, probably for paper, but I’m using it to symbolise both Twitter, and the face-to-connections Twitter has helped me make and sustain. (A colleague wore the clip to a symposium at work, a couple of us who tweet saw it, and now a few of us have these little Twitter birds.)
Next to the little bird is one of my favourite scents/moisturisers – Dr Bronner’s Magic All-One! Patchouli and Lime Organic Balm. A little goes a long way. It smells good. It makes my skin feel good. What more can I say?
I love fountain pens, and a current favourite is the little orange one in the picture. Bought this recently, when we went to Sydney. The maker is Campo Marzio.
The jewellery? I thought they’d add some colour to the picture. I seem to have amassed a veritable dragon’s hoard worth of jewellery over these past few months. Necklaces (lots of necklaces), earrings, and rings. You’ll note turquoise features heavily. It’s my favourite semi-precious gemstone. I blame Etsy for the hoard. It seems I have to collect things. If I’m not collecting books, it’s fountain pens, and if it’s not fountain pens it’s jewellery. They certainly add colour to my days!

Yay! I was just wishing today that you would post a new one!
You went to Campo Marzio. Cool little shop, ain’t it?
I wonder if compulsive collectivitis is more common among librarians than other professions? I suspect my ereader has become my favourite thing: I was very fond of my old kindle but am loving my new Sony much more.
Jaded, yes the Campo Marzio shop is good. Didn’t let myself look too long though, or I would have left with more than just the wee orange pen 🙂
What do you collect, snail? And what’s your old Kindle doing these days? Languishing in a box?
I suspect books are my primary item for collecting: nicely bound books and eclectic books and odd books. Hmmm…I think there’s a blog post there 🙂
The kindle is now part of the pile of books on the little table beside my bed; a mix of read and waiting to be read.
