Current aversion

I don’t understand my current aversion to podcasts. I used to enjoy listening to podcasts during my commute, but some months ago (last year?) I started to not be able to stand listening to the chatter, whether it was one or two people talking about something they’re interested in, or journalists talking about current affairs.

I would start listening to an episode of a podcast I thought I enjoyed, only to find myself either getting annoyed by the speaker’s voice, or by the subject matter of their podcast. At first I thought it was just me wanting to hide away from the current affairs podcasts because the news is either depressing or maddening these days, but then I found myself not enjoying book reviews, or music, or technology, or ANY of the podcasts I was subscribed to1.

Maybe last year’s surgery and then two months of recovery disrupted my routine? While I was recovering at home I watched a lot of Netflix and other tv, but didn’t listen to any/many podcasts. It doesn’t explain why I feel like I can’t stand listening.

I still haven’t deleted my podcast app, though. Maybe I’ll feel like listening again eventually?

For now I only listen to music. All good.

This change hasn’t really disrupted my life particularly, and I don’t think it’s that blog-worthy, really, but I started to write a post about it on Mastodon and then realised I had more than just a few words to say about this so decided to blog instead. Do you have a listening routine?

  1. Podcasts I used to enjoy included Chat 10 Looks 3, The New York Times Book Review, On The Reg, Africa Daily, ABC News Daily, Tech Won’t Save Us… etc. ↩︎
