It’s only January, but already this year has been, and is going to be, filled with many firsts:
- We were interviewed for tv. (Yeh, ok, I’m sick of it already, so no more on this topic.)
- I’ll be going to Kuala Lumpur for work in March. I’m putting this in the list despite not being 100% certain that it’s really going to happen. And despite the fact that I’ve booked my flights and accomodation, and submitted all the relevant paperwork that my employer requires. This will also be the first time I’ve spent away from M in years! A week apart! Will I cope?
- I’ll be submitting my first conference paper (it may also be my first rejection, but hey, I have to try, I guess). Any librarians reading this, the closing date for submitting papers to the Australian Library and Information Association‘s biennial conference, Click 06, is February 1st! The conference will be held here in Perth, yes Perth, in September. Kit? Fiona? Ivan? Morgan? Laura?
- First contact with a relative in the Netherlands, who found me by doing a search for our shared surname. Well, M and M’s parents know him, but I have never met him and didn’t even know he existed until he emailed me in Flickr. The Perth branch of the family haven’t actually had that much contact with him over the years, so it’s been nice to email each other and pass on messages and greetings. The funny thing is that he can’t write in English, and I can’t read or write Dutch – thank goodness for Babel Fish! (Hoi Wubbotje!)
- CherryRipe‘s first Chinese New Year with the family in yonks! I’m really looking forward to it!
2006 is really the year 4703 according to the Chinese calendar, and the Year of the Dog – which happens to be ‘my’ year. If you know anything about the Chinese horoscope, you can probably work out how old I am going to be this year. (Hint: not 24, and not 48.)

“I’m putting this in the list despite not being 100% certain that it’s really going to happen.”
Yup, know that feeling.
I’m hoping to go to ALIA too – my parents are expecting me to visit them.
Great!! We’ll have to catch up when you’re here! π
“Hint: not 24, and not 48”
Hmm, 12? No that would make it illegal. 60? I’m not into gerontophilia.
You must be 36!
If I either a) win the lottery (unlikely, since I never buy lottery tickets) or b) come up with a way to convince someone they need to pay to send me to ALIA (well. . . you never know), I’ll be there. This past year has brought along any number of strangenesses, so I suppose more may be in store.
I’m glad the TV interview wasn’t too bad. I have talked to many, many totally clueless reporters in my life, and I find the best thing to do is just decide what you’re going to say ahead of time and answer with what you want to say regardless of what they ask. Politicians, of course, do this all the time–it’s kind of snarky, but it’s the best way to make sure your message is going to get through and not whatever slant the reporter wants to put on it.
I would absolutely love to visit WA – and attending the conference would be good preparation for NLS3 here. But I was also thinking of attending AALL or SLA in the US and visiting Minnesota again – so we’ll see. How much funding I can get from my work will probably be the key factor. Btw, your WoW interview made for fascinating reading. It reinforced some of the stereotypes I have about the mainstream media. I’m actually taking a little break from WoW – just a result of some unexpected yet positive changes in my life.
M: I’m not responding to that gerontophilia comment!
Laura: I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you do make it here! π I’m hoping that I’ll at least get the time off to go to the conference (I’m not holding my breath for funding from my work, to tell the truth! We’ll see). And re the interview, yeh I did try to stick to the points I wanted to make, but I’m sure my lack of experience with the media will shine through…
Morgan: I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you too! It sounds like you’re going to have a busy year whether or not you make it out West. Yeh, I know what you mean about WoW, breaks are good, we have them all the time. Life trumps gaming! π
